Large volcanic eruptions with an ash veil that enters the stratosphere, tend to ____ at the surface.

They tend to explode at the surface. If they produce significant ash, then they are of the continental pyroclastic-type volcanoes of the more viscous andesite-rhyolite-dacite compositions rather than the much less viscous basalt of oceanic volcanoes like those in Hawaii.
