Increases water holding capacity of soil.
Historically: medicinal purposes like a disinfectant or treating burns.
Homework aside, it's most useful where it was created... In the bog. Those wetlands purify air and help to limit flood damage. Endangered animals and plants live in those areas. Mining those sites reduces their numbers.
