The cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane, is the outer layer of the cell and protects the interior parts of the cell by limiting the number and size of the substances going in and out of the cell. The semi-permeable nature of the cell membrane allows small molecules like oxygen, carbon dioxide, small ions, hydrophobic substances, and water to pass through easily while larger molecules like sugars are allowed to pass through using the transmembrane protein channels.
