Germany remained vulnerable to attack from both West and East when it loss an effective alliance with Russia.  It is also believed that Austria-Hungary, and Italy were traditional enemies so n one could help to boast a strong army for Germany's aid during the French attack. These are the reason why triple alliance, though existed, but was unable to be a success.
