3x^2 + 2x - 8

you multiply -8 times 3

x^2 + 2x - 24

2 numbers that multiplied give you -24
those 2 numbers have to add to 2

6 times -4 = -24
6 plus -4 = 2

(x + 6) (x - 4)

divide by 3 since you multiplied -8 by it

(x + 6) (x - 4)
/3 /3

because you can't have a fraction you put the denominator as a coefficient of x

(x + 2).( 3x - 4 ).
