An adverb can be modifying a verb, or an adjective. It can describe a verb or to say to what extent. For example: She quickly walks her dog. Quickly is an adverb that is modifying a verb because it is saying how she walked her dog. Another example could be He is very tall. In the sentence, very is an adverb modifying the adjective, tall. Very is telling us how tall.
