Why did the Confederates take the offensive so soon after they saved Richmond?

Lee believed that if he could destroy the army of the Potomac (or a significant portion of it) on the Union soil, either public opinion in the north would force Lincoln to make a negotiated peace that recognized the CSA as a sovereign, independent country, or Britain and France would officially recognize the CSA, which would have the same effect.
