In order to find how far was drilled into the joist subtract the thickness of the wood from the total drilled and follow those steps

Step 1

Convert mixed number to an improper fraction

1(1)/(3)\ in= (1*3+1)/(3)= (4)/(3)\ in

Step 2

Subtract the thickness of the wood from the total drilled

3-(4)/(3)= (9)/(3)- (4)/(3)= (5)/(3)\ in

Step 3

Convert improper fraction to a mixed number

(5)/(3)\ in=(3)/(3)+(2)/(3)=1+(2)/(3)=1(2)/(3)\ in

therefore

the answer is

1(2)/(3)\ in
