A linear function is where all of the variables and constants are raises to the first power. These form a straight line. f(x)=x^2 is not a linear function because the exponent is raised to the second power (It is squared.) and it does not form a straight line, it forms a parabola.

y = x^2 + 1
This equation is not linear because the power on the variable x is not a power of 1.
