Kaylee has two fraction models, each divided into equal sized sections.

The models are shaded to represent a fraction.

Model A is divided into 8 sections, and 5 sections are shaded.

Model B is divided into 12 sections and 8 sections are shaded.

PART A: Which model shows the greater fraction?

PART B: Explain which fraction is greater.

Answer:

8/12 is greater.

Explanation:

8/12 is greater because if you do the “butterfly strategy”, you can see that 8/12 is 64 and 5/8 is 60 and 64 is greater than 60 so 8/12 is greater.
