2, 3, 5, 9, 17... how does each term relate to the previous term?

The number that was added to the previous number is doubled.
For example:
2+1 = 3
2x1= 2
3+2= 5
2x2=4
5+4=9
4x2=8
8+9=17

Multiply by 2 and Subtract 1,
