By relating her experiences from the first-person point of view, has Vera Brittain increased the suspense of her memoir?

I haven't read any portion of her memoir but in any literary works when the first-person point of view is used, the audience will feel as though he or she is the narrator. So whatever situation the narrator encounters in the story, the reader will be able to relate to because it would seem as though it is happening to him or her as the story progresses.
