x + 3y = -5 (eq. 1)

5x - 2y = 9 (eq. 2)

We can isolate x from equation 1, as follows:

x = -5 - 3y (eq. 3)

and then replace it into equation 2:

5*(-5 - 3y) - 2y = 9

applying distributive property:

5*(-5) - 5*3y - 2y = 9

-25 - 15y - 2y = 9

-25 - 17y = 9

Solving for y:

-17y = 9 +25

y = 34/(-17)

y = -2

Replacing into equation 3:

x = -5 - 3(-2)

x = -5 + 6

x = 1
