4y +1 =13

subtract 1 to both sides

4y +1 -1 = 13 -1 4y=12

divide by 4 to both sides

4y / 4 = 12/4 y=3

4y + 1 = 13

first you need to get rid of the 1 by -1

4y = 13 - 1

which is

4y = 12

then divide by 4

you get

y = 3
