So substitute -6 for a
(-6)² + 5(-6) - 3

Remember that because the -6 is in parentheses, you multiply -6 x -6, not -1 x 6².

= 36 - 30 - 3

Read left to right when simplifying expressions
= 6 - 3
= 3

3 is your final answer :)
