Juliet had been given a mild poison to feign her death. When Romeo hears of this and goes to the tomb to confirm his doubts, he thinks that Juliet is actually dead. In his grief, he takes his own life. Juliet then wakes and delivers a monologue of her own grief upon discovering what Romeo had done, and takes his knife to take her own life as well, so that they may die together.
