Add an x to get rid of the -x on the right-hand side
-9x + 1 + x = 17
Tidy
-8x +1 = 17
Take away 1 from both sides to get rid of the 1 on the left-hand side
-8x = 17 -1
Tidy
-8x - 16
Solve by dividing by -8 to get x on its own
x = 16/-8 = -2
