Take off the denominator. Now you just have 3, 2, and 1. If you add those up you get 6. When you add 2 to 6 you get eight. In this you want to get to the number of the denominator, so your answer is 2.

What other users are trying to explain is; imagine you have 8 pieces of yarn, first you use 1 piece of it then you use 2 and then finally 3 afterwards you are left with 2 pieces of yarn and that will be the part that is blue in a fraction it would be 2/8.
