Why are small populations so much more likely to experience genetic drift

The founder effect occurs when a portion of the population (i.e. "founders") separates from the old population to start a new population with different allele frequencies. Small populations are more susceptible genetic drift than largepopulations, whose larger numbers can buffer the population against chance events.
