survives and seeks revenge.
The second passage is the key here. When Rainsford climbs into General Zaroff's bedroom, Zaroff congratulates him and tells him he's won. However, Rainsford's reaction is not celebratory instead the narrator says, "Rainsford did not smile." He tells Zaroff that his is still a beast and Zaroff is excited that the competition is still in. When Zaroff says, "On guard" the reader is to infer the men drew their weapons. We know that Rainsford won because he is the one who had a good night's sleep. If Rainsford did not seek revenge, weapons would not have been drawn, Zaroff would still be alive and sleeping in his own bed.
