The oxygen released during the photosynthesis process received from the water. Van Niel proposed that the oxygen source of photosynthesis was water, not carbon dioxide. This was first proposed in the 1930s. Water is absorbed by plants through their roots that are fixed in the soil and transported to the leaves by the stem. Solar energy produces the excitation of electrons and causes the breakdown of water molecules, so that oxygen is released.
