Some of the carbon dioxide is transported dissolved in the plasma. Some carbon dioxide is transported as carbaminohemoglobin. However, most carbon dioxide istransported as bicarbonate. As blood flows through the tissues, carbon dioxidediffuses into red blood cells, where it is converted into bicarbonate.
