According to the Buddhist faith in order to achieve nirvana the must follow what is know as the eight fold path or following Dharma. Hope this helps

They have to understand the Four Noble Truths. Those being, Suffering, Cause of Suffering, Relief of Suffering, and the way to end Suffering.
