(2x^4+3x^2+7)-(3x^3+9x+4)

you have to take away the parentheses first

2x^4 + 3x^2 + 7 - 3x^3 - 9x - 4

combine like terms

2x^4 - 3x^3 + 3x^2 - 9x + 3
