Increased consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin increases phytochemicals that are associated with a lower incidence and slower progression of age-related macular degeneration.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are two types of carotenoids that are found in many green leafy vegetables, fruits, egg yolks and other plants. They are also found in greater amount in the macula of the human eye, providing the macula its characteristic yellowish color. Studies have shown that high consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin help to prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or may reduce the progression of the disease.
