1. George uses the recipe to make muffins. Estimate the total amount of cinnamon and nutmeg he uses.Describe how you made your estimate.

3. George puts the chopped apples in a bowl Then he takes out 1/2 cups of the apples and adds the oil.What is the combined amount of apple, and oil in the bowl?

1. 2 and 1/8th teaspoons of both. we needed a common denominator so we could combine both to get the total amount
2.a. oh you meant than ok 5/8th teaspoons because we do the same as 1 but we subtract 3/4th from 1 and 3/8th
2.b. we can't simplify any further
3. 1 cup

1) We know he uses 1 and 3/8 teaspoons of cinnamon and 3/4 teaspoons of nutmeg.

So we can add those:

(1 + 3/8) + (3/4)

we know that 3/4 = 6/8

1 + 3/8 + 6/8 = 1 + 9/8 = 1 + 8/8 + 1/8 = 2 + 1/8

then he uses 2 and 1/8 teaspons in total of bot ingredients togheter.

2a) We can calculate the difference:

(1 + 3/8) - 3/4 = (1+3/8) -6/8 = 1 - 3/8 = 8/8 - 3/8 = 5/8

He uses 5/8 more teaspoons of cinnamon that nutmeg.

b) you know that he uses more cinnamon because in the mixed number of the cinnamon we have the whole number 1 and a positive fraction, while in the number of teaspoons of the nutmeg we only have a fraction that is smaller than 1.

3) We have 1 and 1/4 cups of chopped apples, if he removed 1/2 cups we have a total of:

1 + 1/4 - 1/2 = 1 +1/4 - 2/4 = 1 - 1/4 = 4/4 - 1/4 = 3/4 cups of apples in the bowl.

Now we add the 1/4 cups of oil, so we have:

3/4 + 1/4 = 1 cup

this means that in the bowl we have 1 cup of the combination of chopped apples and oil
