use the pathagorean theorem which a^2+b^2=c^2.

1) 4^2+4^2=C^2
2) C=5.656

The range of the possibilities is 9 and up, the answer is because the third length has to be more than the other two lengths combined. So, eight won't work as a third length because eight is not more than four and four, it is equal to.
