How did the government respond to the tunisian revolution?

Like in most revolutions, especially the ones that are focused on changing an authoritarian government, the government responded with arrests, beating up and attacking the protesters, using things like water cannons and tear gas, and all other types of useful manners of stopping a revolution from happening. Eventually, everyone turned on the president and he had to escape the country and go into exile.
