According to Maslow, a fundamental cause of maladjustment is failure to satisfy the belongingness and love needs.
When you feel like you don't belong anywhere and that nobody loves you or cares for you, you are likely to be maladjusted in the society. This is why, according to Maslow, you should satisfy these needs so as to avoid feeling unhappy and like you don't fit in.
