The precursor to the complex political organizations we now call the state is the chiefdom.

Chiefdom was a political organization or unit that was common in non-industrial societies. It consisted of communities or villages that were under the control of a person or a group of persons, called chiefs. Its government was a form of aristocracy or centralization of power.

This organization is widely considered as transitional to the true state we have today.
