Read the excerpt from "The Tell-Tale Heart.”

The night waned, and I worked hastily, but in silence. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs.
I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye—not even his—could have detected any thing wrong.
Read the excerpt from "The Black Cat.”
This hideous murder accomplished, I set myself forthwith, and with entire deliberation, to the task of concealing the body. I knew that I could not remove it from the house, either by day or by night, without the risk of being observed by the neighbors. Many projects entered my mind. At one period I thought of cutting the corpse into minute fragments, and destroying them by fire. At another, I resolved to dig a grave for it in the floor of the cellar.

Answer: A. The author explores human psychology by showing how little remorse both narrators have.

Both narrators in this excerpt have just commited a horrible act. However, the thing that makes them particularly similar is the fact that they do not seem to exhibit remorse. Their attitude is calculating, and instead of being upset about what they just did, they are concentrated on the future and the task ahead. This lack of remorse and emotion is a powerful theme, and through it the author invites us to analyze the complexity of human psychology and human nature.
