Basically, there is no ideological difference between the two organizations. La Raza Unida Party began in 1970 as the political arm of the MAYO (Mexican American Youth Organization,) which was founded in San Antonio in 1967. La Raza Unida ran political candidates for multiple offices in the Southwest in the 1970s before moving to a more grassroots community activist approach. La Raza Unida grew so quickly that the MAYO, its parent organization, was folded into it as the youth arm of the party. The two organizations have organized hundreds of protests against discrimination, including acts of civil disobedience. La Raza Unida and MAYO remain a prominent and strident voice for Latino interests in the United States.
