Naomi is riding her bicycle at a constant rate of 0.3 miles per minute. Vivian is riding her bicycle at a constant rate of 0.5 miles per minute and is 1 mile behind Naomi on the same road, riding the same direction. If the girls ride at constant rates, how many minutes will it take Vivian to be riding next to Naomi?

n=.3t, v=.5t-1, when they are riding next to each other n=v so:

.5t-1=.3t

.2t-1=0

.2t=1

t=5

So Vivian catches up to Naomi in 5 minutes....
