A more specific answer could be the cuban missile crisis. It was a standoff between the US and russia who both had nuclear missiles pointed at eachother, it was the closest we ever came to nuclear war

Basically, President Truman's plan in using the atomic bombs was to impress and effectively scare the Soviet Union into stopping their expansion into Asia.
