Is ax^2 the same as 2ax

ax^2 = axx (one "a" times "x" times "x")
whereas 2ax =ax+ax (there are two "ax"s)
one is adding one is multiplying

No there's a difference between it, I know what it was on the tip of my tongue but I forgot it
