I'm pretty sure it's a compound sentence. Because even though they make since together as one, it'll make just as much as two.

Answer:

The correct answer is "compound sentence"

Step-by-step explanation:

A compound sentence is formed by two independant clauses that are related but they can stand on their own. They are joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, or, but) that is placed after a comma.

In the example provided, the two independant clauses are "lightning lit the sky" and "the thunder crushed". These sentences are linked by the coordinating conjunction "and" with a comma before it.

The rest of the options are incorrect since a complex sentence is formed by an independant clause and a subordinate clause.

A simple sentence is an independant clause that can stand on its own with no subordinate or coordinate clause.

A run-on sentence takes place when joining two independant clauses incorrectly.
