Which tool would a geologist use to test a mineral's resistance to scratching?

It really depends on the hardness of the mineral. If it is soft it will scratch with something small like a penny and if it is harder it may scratch with a steel knife. Hope this helps! If not was there a choice of items?

Edit: Mohs Hardness scale helps on this.
