I believe the answer is: They lived in luxurious city apartments

During the Gilded age, there was a massive influx of immigrants that came from Europe and Asia into united states. This provide large amount of labour workers that enable wealthy factory owners to increase their production and accumulate large amount of wealth. This make the afford to live in luxurious city apartments during the Gilded Age.
