It was performed by Oswald Avery, Colin MacLeod, and Maclyn McCarty in their famous experiment that the enzyme they used was
deoxyribonucleodepolymerase. This specific kind of enzyme was used because it can be easily extracted from a variety of animal sources to be used in destroying the transforming power.
