He starts with 1 and 1/4 then he adds 1/2 then he adds 8 3/4:
1 1/4+1/2+8(3/4)=X.
Multiply: 8(3/4)= 8/1•3/4= 2/1•3/1=6/1=6.
Add: 1 1/4+1/2 or 2/4=1 and 3/4+6=7 and 3/4.
He now has 7 and 3/4 ounces :)
