a contractor digs a hole for the basement of a new house that is 40ft long and 10 half feet deep what is the width of the hole if 6510 cubic feet of dirt are removed

V=LWD (I am assuming that you meant depth is 10 1/2 or 10.5 deep)

W=V/(LD)

W=6510/(40*10.5)

W=6510/420

W=15.5 ft

we find volume by multiplying length x width x height, or depth in this case.

v = lwh. How do we "solve" this for width? We divide both sides by l and h. We end up with w = v/lh

Plugging in what we have, w = 6510/(40 x 10 1/2) = 6510/420 = 15 1/2.

So, the hole is 15 1/2 feet wide.

Hope this helps!
