ax+8=3x+b
List values of b for which x=3 is the solution of the equation.

ax+8=3x+b isolate b by subtracting 3x from both sides...

b=ax-3x+8

b=x(a-3)+8 if x=3 then:

b=3a-9+8

b=3a-1
