After World War II, the European democratic countries came together to rebuild and by doing so, alliances were formed and relations improved. The United States under Truman and the Marshall Plan provided economic relief, NATO brought a military front, and the European Union helped unite countries. When they came together, they became a strong force which was able to stand up to the Soviets, who began to lose their power. A group effort and a common goal helped end communism in Europe.
