To find the answer, first note that the question is just asking for the sum or the total of the two values. In other words, all you have to do is add 8   3/8 and  4    2/5. To do this, first convert the two mixed numbers to be improper fractions. The former will be 67/8 while the latter will be 22/5. Afterwards, you should find a common denominator for the two fractions so you can combine them. One common multiple of 8 and 5 is 40, so you multiply both the numerators and denominators of each improper fraction by the number needed to make the denominator equal to 40. For 67/8, and multiply (5/5) to the fraction, while you multiply (8/8) to 22/5. You then add the two fractions, and you simplify the fraction by converting it into a mixed number. :D
