x=y+4
x+y=20
now substitute the x for (y+4) in the second equation
(y+4)+y=20
2y+4=20
2y=16
y=8
now substitute 8 for y in the first equation
x=8+4
x=12
so y=8 and x=12

The two numbers would be 12 and 8 because 12 is 4 more than 8 and so the sum of 12 and 8 is 20.
