We can use the equation j=1/3(d)+4, where j represents Jessica's cards and d represents David's cards. We already have the number of cards that Jssica has, so we can just solve the equation.

12=1/3(d)+4
simplified is
8=1/3(d)
which is d=24

So David has 24 cards.
