Why are presidents more powerful today than they were in the past?

The literal answer to this question is that they have bigger, better weapons at their disposal. During the Nuclear Arms Race in the Cold War era, the US pumped out more than 30,000 nuclear warheads that if used, only 8 of them could destroy the entire planet.
