That is true.
When you're writing to your teacher at school or your boss at work, you don't use:
"yo"
"wassup"
"hey m8"
You use:
"Dear ____"
etc. etc. in formal English.
But when you're writing to your friends you might use:
"yo"
"wassup"
"hey m8"
