Why didn't factory owners treat workers well in the 1900s?

Because at the time there was really no law stating that the workers had to be in good conditioned working environments. They could have made the workers work long hours. And tell them what there minimum wage was.

For profits. Less money going towards cleanliness and safety, and wages = more money going towards profit.
