By the time Vladek returns to sosnowiec from the prisoner of war camp he finds out that the Germans are rationing food and as a result there was too little food remain for Jews. This situation left him no other way and, despite the risk, he starts dealing with food at the black market in order to keep supply for Jews in needed condition.
